About Wheelock Academy Historic Site

Wheelock Academy Historic Site preserves the grounds and surviving buildings of a Choctaw boarding school that operated from 1832 to 1955, and it is recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a site on the National Register of Historic Places. Set near Millerton in McCurtain County, it includes an on-site museum and is known for interpreting the school’s history and the Choctaw Nation’s long commitment to education.

Visitors can tour the grounds and museum, and the site also hosts programs and events through the year, including alumni reunions, youth camps, and school field trips. The museum in refurbished LeFlore Hall holds historic photographs, personal items, and other artifacts that bring the story into focus, while the campus itself still carries the quiet weight of its past through remaining structures, open grounds, and the original boarding-school setting.
